Top 5 books to read with your preschooler

In celebration of Family Literacy Day

The Nut Family

Ella’s Nut Family

Family Literacy Day is coming up on January 27, so I thought I’d share some favourite books I like to read with my daughter Ella, who is now 4.5 years old. These are her top five picks right now:

1. The Book with No Pictures

B.J. Novak

This book is the perfect intersection of my daughter’s sense of humour and my sense of humour. Absolutely hilarious! As fun to read as it is for the kids to listen to. This book is number one in our house right now. Check out the author reading his book to a class of kids.

2. The Day the Crayons Quit – Oliver Jeffers

Oliver Jeffers writes wonderful children’s books. This one is so great for kids who are interested in art and drawing. The illustrations are perfect for the story and again as enjoyable to read as it is for kids to listen to and look at. Here’s a trailer for the book.

 3. The Nuts: Bedtime at the Nuthouse – Eric Litwin

Over the past couple of years, I’ve met Eric Litwin  during the children’s festival circuit. You may know him for his work on the original “Pete the Cat” books. This is his latest and is also lots of fun. Like “Pete the Cat,” be sure you learn the tune before you read it to your kids. Check out the live reading by Eric.

 4. Laika Astronaut Dog – Owen Davey

Space is a big theme around here these days. This is a historical story, with a great twist for the kids. We found this one at the library and have been enjoying it every night since. This book is also really beautifully illustrated. Is your kid into space? Give this one a read. Learn more about the book.

5. Music is For Everyone – Jill Barber

Jill Barber is a very talented singer/songwriter and mom who now makes her home here in Vancouver. As a musical family we love this one. It is about music of all styles which I think is so great for kids because they are blessed to not have preconceived notions about musical styles the way we adults often do. Buy the book on Amazon.

Family Literacy Day Playlist on Kids’ CBC

Check out the Family Literacy Day video playlist on Kids’ CBC’s Youtube channel. “Goodnight,” from my series “Will’s Jams,” made the list. Check out my daughter Ella who makes a cameo!
