Here it is, Thanksgiving weekend, so I wanted to take the time to reflect and share the four things I’m most thankful for in my life:
- My kids: Ella and June are such nice girls. We all have so much fun together and it is truly a gift being able to watch them grow and learn new things. I see the world in a whole new light because I am a father. Of all of the hats I wear in my life, being a dad is my favourite. My daughters are my inspiration when I’m writing songs as well as a perfect test audience – Ella’s Umbrella, Daddy Daughter Day and Daddy’s Lullaby are a few of my favourites!
- My wife: Kim is an amazing woman. I get to see her in action all the time (and trust me she is a force to behold!). I am so thankful she married me 10 years ago and has supported me and my career. She is an amazing wife, mother and manager. I truly believe I have already achieved more in my life than I could have ever hoped to achieve if Kim was not a part of my life. (You can read more about Kim’s role in our company in a recent interview with Entrepreneur Mom Now.)
- My parents: My life as I know it would not be even remotely possible without the support of the rest of my family. We share a multigenerational home with my parents with separate living spaces (You can read more about our living situation in my interview with the Canadian Press.) My parents are actively involved in raising our kids, and definitely help immensely when I’m on tour. My mom has also been a major influence on my career when it comes to my French music and performance. Her song “En haut, en bas” has been, and continues to be a mainstay in my set list. My dad is always there to support me and the rest of the family as well with airport drop off/pick up after tours, household repairs and yard work. He also shares the same morning ritual of doing the New York Times Crossword and is there to help me out when I get stuck!
- My friends: I am blessed with a very large circle of friends. As my life seems to get busier and busier all the time, I may not always have the chance to see my friends as much as I’d like, but I know they are there for me. I am reminded by this all the time, and perhaps never more than this past couple of weeks when I launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund my new album I’m about to record in Nashville. My friends are always there for me, and I love them all for it.
Hope you’re having a great Thanksgiving long weekend with your family and are spending some quality time together and have paused to reflect on the things you’re most thankful for.
